Maybe it’s my age or the long ongoing lockdown due to Covid-19 or maybe the coming of Spring. All I know is that songs from my past are showing up in my stream of consciousness with increasing regularity.
Most recent is “Long Ago and Far Away,” a song by Ira Gershwin and Jerome Kern introduced by the pop singer, Jo Stafford, in 1944. The words hurt because they remind me of my beloved who died two years ago:
Long ago and far away, I dreamed a dream one day
And now that dream is here beside me
Long the skies were overcast but now the clouds have passed
You’re here at last
Chills run up and down my spine, Aladdin’s lamp is mine
The dream I dreamed was not denied me
Just one look and then I knew
That all I longed for long ago was you
Chills run up and down my spine, Aladdin’s lamp is mine
The dream I dreamed was not denied me
Just one look and then I knew
That all I longed for long ago was you
